WARNING
This is not a scientific study. The choice of participants is not representative of anything except maybe the people we can find in an art school.
CONCEPT
Accalmie is a website made as a tool to observe body language and non-verbal communication. After collecting a dataset of over 1800 sequences, I decided to apply 2 types of analysis: gestures and emotions.
The interface of Accalmie offers the possibility to immerse oneself into this database through 4 axes: the questions I asked, the people who answered them, the gestures they did, and the emotions they felt.
PROTOCOLE
The choice of questions was determined with the objective of provoking a maximum of different reactions in the participants.
The brief at the beginning of the interviews was as follows:
« I’m working on language. I will ask you a series of questions, feel free to answer them as you wish, to develop your answer if you feel like it.
I can't tell you any more right now, but as soon as the interview ends, I'll explain and you'll tell me if you're okay with me using the rushes. »
As the interview progressed, I could feel the discomfort and embarrassment settling in the air. When at the end of the interview I explained to
the participants that their answers would remain silent on my hard drive, I could read the relief in their eyes.
To ensure that the content of the project would not go against the will of the participants, a questionnaire was sent to them.
Among the 55 people initially interviewed, only one did not wish to appear in the project, and another requested that his first name be changed.
This was followed by a long period of video editing...
For emotions, I contacted the company Imotions, which offers services based on artificial intelligence. They graciously agreed to grant me a license
that allowed me to analyze each of my videos, and to draw a value for each of the 7 main emotions.
Gestural analysis posed more problems. Not having found a satisfactory automated solution, I decided to carry out the analysis myself.
The help of a software engineer nevertheless made it possible to accelerate the work.
